Esports: NYSBRA Esports Championship, Zwift, (30 March 2024)

NYSBRA hosted the only state Esports championship in the United States in March, crowning Chad Tavernia and Jennie Hansen as the first New York’s Open Men and Open Women Champions, respectively. Presented by the Western New York Bike Racing Club, the intensity on Zwift was brutal in both fields, with Chad and Jennie breaking away early and holding off their chasers for the whole race. We plan to build the event next year with a race around the end of January, adding a commentator, corporate sponsorship, and a live stream. Get ready! – Rick Dalton, WNYBRC, Race Director

Cyclocross: The Uncle Sam GP of Cyclocross Day #2, Troy (16 October 2023)

The 17th Uncle Sam Grand Prix was honored to host the NYSBRA Championship. Uncle Sam was the 2nd & 3rd stop in the 2023 CBRCX Series p/b Commonroots & Unified Beer Works. 117 racers competed on Sunday (day 2) of USGP ready to win a title! With the weather forecast for a wet and muddy weekend, the patterns shifted in our favor and we enjoyed a sunny and dry weekend of racing. A fast yet challenging course with off-camber descents, grinding up hills, and just the right amount of pavement was the perfect course to host a Championship race. We had over 20 racers U15 competing and clanking cowbells all day encouraging their friends lap after lap. Capital Bicycle Racing Club continues to strive to make opportunities for juniors to race and ride their bikes at the highest level and would like to thank NYSBRA for the opportunity to win a state title. Time Trial: NYSBRA Time Trial Championships, Cooperstown Airport (19 August 2023)

111 individual riders came from all over NYS to the 2023 NYSBRA State TT Champs, held at the Cooperstown Airport. Central New York Cyclists (CNYC) hosted the event for the first time on a new course on Route 166. The riders competed in multiple categories and distances; though exhausted from their hard day out on the bike the racers feedback was very positive. Thanks to NYSBRA for their support. The 2023 NYSBRA Criterium State Championships were hosted by the Main St Bikes Garrett’s Brewing Race Team in Trumansburg, 12Aug. With an ever-changing forecast and hit or miss showers all around, we stayed dry for all but the Elite Men’s race. We had was a fantastic day of DownTown Crit racing on a 8 turn, 1 mile residential course that is exciting to watch and a thrill to race. There are a lot of moving pieces to pulling of a downtown crit and with much help from many it all comes together. A few years into this event the crew is really getting it efficiently dialed in, so let’s grow this race! Thank you all: racers, fans, officials, timers, sponsors, villagers & Volunteers! Road: NY Capital Region Road Race- 15 July 2023

With 330 registered participants, the 22nd annual NY Capital Region Race was a great success. Racers were treated to some new pavement on course, and unlike all the days in between, dry weather! New this year was the addition of junior 9-14 races on a 13 mile course, supporting Capital Bicycle Racing Club’s commitment to enhancing opportunities for junior riders. Track Time Trial Championships- Elites (11 June 2023) and Juniors (25 June 2023)

June was Timed Event Championship month at Kissena Velodrome. Men/Women and Masters State Championships were held on June 11^th, while Juniors had their chance to race the clock on June 25^th. There are many ways to race on the track and timed events offers riders a way to focus their training to maximize their fitness and technical skills in an effort to beat the clock in both sprinter and enduro friendly time trials. Individual events at the championships included a Flying 200 meter, 500 meter, Kilo (1 Kilometer), and 2 kilometer pursuit, each with a separate podium given the unique aspect of each race. Gravel: The Keuka Gravel Classic p/b Steuben Brewing Company- 4 June 2023

The Keuka Lake Gravel Classic hosted the 2023 NYSBRA NYS Gravel Grinder Championship at the Steuben Brewery in Hammondsport. The turnout was incredible and the competition was next level. Over 225 riders competed for the championship in eight categories. Cyclocross and Fat Bike: Salt City Spectacular- 15 October 2022

After a 9 year hiatus, we were excited to return the NYS Cyclocross Championship to the Syracuse region. Over 100 racers from across the state (as well as PA and ON) competed on the legendary Long Branch Park course, which has hosted cyclocross racing for over 35 years. Not even 40+ mph wind gusts could stop the racers from having a day full of fun on a challenging course. Mountain Bike: NYSBRA Mountain Bike Champions- 11 September 2022

The NYS Mountain Bike Race Series finished their 8 races with the Series Championships on Sunday September 11th at Riedlbauers Round Top Resort. There was some great racing in over 40 categories and age groups. Individual race winners were crowned in addition to the overall winners of the Series Points , who were also crowned NYSBRA State Champions! This year’s series saw over 750 different individuals compete in the races throughout the series. Congratulations to all our winners and to all who participated this year. Criterium: CRCA Grant’s Tomb Crit- 23 July 2022

From the winter snow to the peak summer highs, Grant’s Tomb proved that it’s a season highlight regardless of weather. With nearly 450 unique starters and 14 fields, we had an action packed day of racing, filled with the positive competitive spirit that inspires all of us to roll up at the start line. Time Trial: NYSBRA Time Trial Championship- 10 July 2022

Beautiful weather and a great turnout greated riders yet again to rural Tioga Center for “The Race of Truth.” Riders started at minute intervals to give everything they had over their race distance of either 10k, 20k, or 40k. Many riders chose to double up entries or actually double up on racing, doing either 60k or even 80k total for the day! Many of these tough racers first did an Individual TT by race category or age, then turned around and did either an “Eddie Merckx” non-aero race, tandem, or a Team Time Trial (because suffering is so much more fun with friends!) Congratulations to all the new NYSBRA State Time Trial champions and competitors!

Gravel Grinder: NatiFo Forty- 4 June 2022

Since we got the idea of getting a few like-minded friends together for a fun and hard day on the bike, over the years we have endured it all. From freezing rain & sleet blasting us with driving winds, then changing the date to June and getting oppressive heat, to this year, when in our fourth year NatiFo finally got the perfect weather such a sweet course deserves. We had a perfect day and those of us that like racing our bikes opted to spend it doing just that! The dirt roads were hard and fast. The sky was clear and blue. The air dry and warm. The Burdett Fire Company chicken dinner was delicious. The Garrett’s beer was fresh and cold! Let’s do it again! Thanks to all for a great NYSBRA State Champs! -John Compton

Road Race: The CRCA Bear Mountain Classic- 7 May 2022

With incredibly challenging weather, CRCA’s Bear Mountain Classic was a test of not only a racer’s fitness & tactics, but their willpower as well. Everyone who stepped up to the starting line helped create an inspiring and positive race, and as Race Director I am enormously grateful for all the support from NYSBRA and CRCA members who were critical for making the day a success. Fat Bike: Empire State Games Winter Games, hosted by Doug Haney of Bike Adirondacks, Mt. Pisgah Recreation Center, Saranac Lake, 5Feb22 (this is the 2021-2022 season championship)

Fat Bike: Empire State Games Winter Games- 5 February 2022

Despite temps dipping to -7 and nearly a foot and a half of snow just 24 hours before the race, Saranac Lake’s Mt. Pisgah put on a Winter Bike show as athletes battled cold and soft snow for Empire State Winter Games and the first-ever dedicated Fat Bike race to award the 2021-2022 NYSBRA state titles. Cross country riders tackled a grueling 5K course featuring a climb halfway up the mountain followed by a zig zagging descent on the ski slope that caused its fair share of crashes into the soft snow. ESG Dual Slalom action on MTBs under the lights followed the XC as athletes battled head-to-head in a downhill sprint around banked turns, deep ruts and a series of rollers. A special shout out goes to the Village of Saranac Lake for a fabulous evening of racing.

CX: Webster Park Cyclocross- 7 November 2021

The Cyclocross State Champs took place in Webster, NY at Webster Park near Lake Ontario on Sunday, November 7th. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the riders who traveled from all over the state to contest this fun and challenging course. With sections highlighting the grassy and classic rolling hills of the park setting, dirt and gravel paths to hammer and best of all some challenging technical run-ups and descents, Webster Cyclocross has something for every type of rider. It was a great day and Full Moon Vista was excited to have so many riders make the trip!

Track: Kissena Track Championships- 28-29 August 2021

Track is back at the Kissena Velodrome! The NYSBRA Track Championships took place on the weekend of 28-20Aug, with the Junior races taking place on Saturday and the Senior races on the track of dreams. The Junior State Championships had riders from ranging 10-18 years old. The Senior races on Sunday included the Masters, Category 4 and Women and Open 1/2/3 Omnium events.

Racing was fast and fun for all! Highlights include a flying 500 meter victory and a state championship was awarded to Masters World Champion and Star Track Coach, Delroy Walters. Junior phenom Enzo Edmonds won both the 13-14 Boys and the Elite Open 1/2/3 Championships! Crit: T-Burg Crit- 14 August 2021

Trumansburg was the proud host of the NYSBRA State Criterium Championship at this year’s Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS) T-burg Crit. The technical 7-turn course winds through a beautiful residential neighborhood adjacent to Trumansburg’s picturesque and historic Main Street. We had another successful series of races with 164 registered riders representing six states! The greater Ithaca area came out to volunteer and spectate like pros, confirming the endorsement of the Village of Trumansburg Board of Trustees for bringing such a healthy and vibrant sporting event into our town!

TT: West Woodward Memorial Time Trial- 1 August 2021

Team Placid Planet hosted the 2nd West-Woodward Memorial Time Trial, which, like the 1st iteration in 2017, was the NYSBRA TT Championship. 96 racers converged on the beautiful Jay Valley in Jay, NY and the sumptuous shoulders of NYS Route 9N. North Country weather made an appearance as most fields raced in a steady, cool rain, but very few if any spirits were dampened. 21 NYS champions emerged. Congratulations champions and all racers for facing the Race of Truth!

Road: Bloomfield Class Road Race- 24 July 2021

Road Racing is back in New York State! Spring arrived in late July in Bloomfield while hosting the NYS State Road Championship on the feared GVCC Bloomfield “Spring” Classic course. With support from both NYSBRA as well as the Genesee Valley Cycling Club, Team Towpath Racing p/b Green Mountain Energy hosted 177 racers from all around the state after a long pause from bike racing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 22 new champions crowned and will wear their jerseys proudly for the next year.
