“Junior Gears” are no more!

  • As of 1Jan23, the UCI has vanquished “junior gears!”  We are all happy for this change!  In case you wondered, the idea used to be that using “hard” gears would strain young knees, so riders under age 18 could use nothing bigger than a 52×14 (or equivalent).  However, the UCI now acknowledges that there is no medical evidence to support this rule.  Not only that, common sense tells us that a 5 second sprint in a 53×11 will hurt a kid’s knees much less than grinding up a mountain for 20 minutes at 60 rpms in a 39×25!
