Message from the NYSBRA President
We happily see most of our favorite races back on the 2022 NYSBRA Race Calendar. Putting on a race is tough work, especially with all the necessary cancellations and low turnouts over the past two years. So it is even more important than ever for you to support your local races! Get on your bike and show these events how much they mean to you. You are the riders that make the race! Without you, we won’t have local races.

A Shoutout to All Full-Time HS Students!
Attention juniors! Did you know the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (ECCC) allows full-time high school students to race in their collegiate events? In New York, check out the Army Cycling Classic race weekend, April 9-10 at the United States Military Academy, for Saturday road race at Harriman State Park and a Sunday criterium right on the West Point campus! We also host clinics at every one of our races; so if you want to learn some more about bicycle racing, ECCC races are a great place to do it!
Registrations are very affordable (college kids don't have money either!!) and maybe you'll meet your future school mates when you take that next step into college. The ECCC has 50+ member schools from Maine to Delaware and hosts events in April (road), September & October (mountain), and October & November (cyclocross).
We welcome you to any of our collegiate races, starting with our five road races during April. You’ll need a (free) USA Cycling junior license or one-day license and, since this is a scholastic event, we ask you to please wear a plain jersey without team or club logos, just like when you're playing soccer or baseball at school.

Old Licenses Erroneously Auto-Renewing
Heads up to all racers, USAC is having issues with their IT system that manages your annual licenses. Many racers have their USAC annual licenses set to “auto-renew” so when they expire, USA Cycling will charge the payment method they have on file without need for the racer to do anything. Many racers like not having to worry about when their licenses expire, and USAC sends emails prior to the auto renewal to remind racers they will be charged.
However, there have been instances where old, unwanted licenses are also being auto-renewed. For example, a racer who once had an international race license over ten years ago but has only used a domestic license since has received emails showing their old international license was going to auto-renew, despite not having used the international license in over ten years. So, be sure you review any auto-renewal emails from USAC and make sure that the license they are going to renew is actually the one you need renewed!
If you have any questions or concerns regarding upcoming licenses, please direct inquiries to Trish Black (tblack@usacycling.org), USAC's Director of Event and Customer Service.

Rule of the Month
The start of race season is a good time to remind everyone that we do this for fun (at least I do)! No one likes to get hurt or maybe even worse, be the cause of someone else getting hurt. Look out for each other by pointing out potholes, communicating with other riders, and by riding smooth, steady, and in a straight line. Keep your hands on the bars around other riders, even when celebrating your big win!
Remember: Safety First! Always read the “Event Notes” in BikeReg and the Race Technical Guide (if there is one) for any race-specific info. Some venues, like those in NYC’s Central and Prospect Parks, have special rules that riders must follow; for example, not passing the lead moto while neutralized during a field pass. Breaking these special rules is dangerous not only for you and other users of the park, but also risks our ability to continue racing at these places.
The applicable rules are:
1N5 Instructions. Riders shall follow the instructions of the race organizers, the officials and police.
1G4(c). The Chief Referee has the power to penalize or recommend suspension of any licensee who refuses to obey instructions of officials or who commits other offenses.
Bike racing is about so much more than who crosses the line first. It's about building community, learning new skills, trying new things, and working with teammates and fellow competitors in the peloton to accomplish awesome things on two wheels. Please take extra care to review rules before race day. Listen to officials and staff on race day, to make sure we all keep our wheels on the pavement and stay healthy to race another day.
